Ngong Forest Sanctuary: Why We Train Where the Trees Are

Ngong Forest Sanctuary is one of Nairobi's last urban indigenous forests β€” and the perfect setting for reconnecting with functional, natural movement.

Sole to Soil – Ngong Forest Sanctuary nature walk

Ngong Forest Sanctuary sits on the southern edge of Nairobi, just minutes from the city centre but a world apart. Stretching across rolling terrain of indigenous forest, river valleys, and open meadows, it is one of the few places in Nairobi where you can walk for hours surrounded by nothing but birdsong and canopy shade. For Wellness Solutions Africa, it is the most meaningful setting we have found for corrective movement work.

The science of green exercise

Exercise performed in natural environments consistently produces lower perceived exertion and better mood outcomes than the same exercise done indoors. A 2015 meta-analysis across 10 studies found that green exercise was associated with greater reductions in tension, confusion, and fatigue compared with indoor training. The forest's uneven terrain, sensory variety, and ambient sound contribute to what researchers call attention restoration β€” the replenishment of focused attention depleted by urban life.

What the forest gives your body

The sanctuary's forest floor β€” roots, loose earth, stream crossings, and natural inclines β€” is exactly the environment your feet evolved to handle. Every step on uneven ground requires micro-adjustments from the ankle, knee, and hip stabilisers. This is corrective training without the clinical setting: your nervous system is solving real proprioceptive problems with every stride.

Why Sole to Soil happens here

We chose Ngong Forest Sanctuary deliberately. It is accessible from across the greater Nairobi area, with secure parking and a peaceful forest entrance. The trails are well-maintained, winding through indigenous vegetation. And it is symbolically right: a protected forest at the city's southern edge deserves to be the setting for an event about reconnecting with the ground.
